One Piece, Thriller Bark Review

Seems like I invited in nothing but trouble!

One Piece, Thriller Bark

by Eiichiro Oda

Genre: Fantasy/Horror

About: The crew get trapped in a mysterious place called Thriller Bark where zombies rule and shadows can be stolen...

The Good

This arc really switches things up and goes all in with horror troupes. We have Nami as the helpless bride, a Frankenstein-wannabe scientist, vampiric shadows, zombies absolutely everywhere, a skeleton musician and a ghost girl. It's a fun mix of gothic and gives the story a fresh feel.

The Bad

The villain in this arc is one of the seven warlords of the sea and he is super lame. His power is cool but he didn't ever feel like a challenge for the gang. I think the silly/ridiculous nature of this manga is at its best when the antagonists feel like real threats and add high stakes to what we're reading. Moria didn't do that for me and seemed like a filler villain.

The Somewhat Iffy

The other warlord that came to Thriller Bark towards the end is that blend of ridiculous and all-powerful, which I like. But there wasn't enough explanation on why he would go against orders and let the crew live.

Overall

It was a fun read and a good change of pace from the main story, but not my favourite of their adventures.
