People become weak when they hesitate. But when they know they can help, there is no limit to their strength!
One Piece, Water 7
by Eiichiro Oda
Genre: Fantasy
About: Is Robin a friend or foe? The crew have been betrayed by one of their own but what are Robin's real motivations for her sudden switch? Luffy and the gang make a lot of powerful enemies by the end of this arc, is Robin one of them?
The Good
Luffy shows us Gear Two of his powers in this arc and it also feels like Gear Two of the manga as the story ups the ante. Of course there's lots of battles and everyone is gaining in strength, but there's also a lot of emotional depth explored in the gang. Usopp has a strong storyline and Robin's place in the crew gets the attention it deserves.
The Bad
I thought the backstory to Robin's childhood was interesting but I didn't like how much of it sort of felt breezed over. At least I felt like there were a lot more chapters to the other crew member's backstories. Her mother, her mentors, even the giant, Saul, we don't see much of them, and even less of all the crews she subsequently joined and ended up betraying over and over again. I would have liked more chapters in Robin's past.
The Somewhat Iffy
The female characters never get to be badassed! Oda seems to enjoy giving the female characters hints of being powerful, but then he always places them low down in terms of literal fighting abilities. In CP9 there is only one female agent who is the least powerful in the group. Even the stupid goofy characters have more power than her. I just wish that when Oda shows us a strong female character with fighting abilities, he'd allow her to be more powerful than *some* of her male counterparts.
Overall
It's silly, it's emotional, it's epic and it's One Piece at its best. Franky joins the crew, we say goodbye to the Merry Go and the crew are tested not just in terms of the battles they fight, but also in their purpose and place on the ship.
