One Piece, Sky Island Review

He's made his decision as a man! Don't waste his efforts!

One Piece, Sky Island

by Eiichiro Oda

Genre: Fantasy

About: The crew search the skies for their next adventure and discover an island in the clouds. While it seems as though they've found a slice of heaven, things are far from ideal and they soon realise the sky island is ruled by a Kami with designs for becoming a real live God.

The Good

I remember reading this for the first time and how much fun this arc read. An adventure in the sky? A god of thunder to reckon with? One Piece is nothing if not crazy and this arc was my favourite for a while because it's just such an epic pirate adventure to shoot up to the skies for treasure. I also really loved the background story of Noland the Liar.

The Bad

The second time reading this arc I was less enamoured by all the chapters. Luffy gets conveniently pushed out of the battles by being lost inside a snake or other such silly distractions and it made the showdown a bit dragged out. Also the Upper Yard tests didn't interest me as much as the other parts of the world and the story so I wanted to skip those battles.

The Somewhat Iffy

Eneru is a good villain and I enjoyed his powers, but I thought it was ridiculous how many times he 'killed' others only for them to be injured for a few chapters, or how many times he was himself defeated by Luffy only to be battling again in the next chapter.

Overall

I took a while to reread this arc as it does feel longer than needed, but it's a fun adventure and another great addition to the epic world that is One Piece.
