How to Write Your First Page

The first page is an amuse-bouche, a small but exceedingly important taster served to prepare the reader for the rest of the novel - Maxine Davies

How to Write Your First Page

About: This is a mini how-to guide published by Mslexia magazine and The Literary Consultancy that highlights the importance of a novel's first page. I was a small contributor to this ebook -the opening extract from my novel (back when it was still titled The Shadow Game) is included.

The help guide has an introduction detailing all the necessary ingredients to a good opening and case examples. The case examples are a little unusual in that they were not picked from (at the time of being featured) published novels. The guide features 18 extracts from a wide range of unpublished novel openings and for each one has a page that critiques these openings - explaining why they are effective and also how they could be improved. There is also a brief addition given by some of the author's where they talk about the feedback they received as well as the current status of the novel since being part of the feature. A few, interestingly, have been self-published or traditionally published so if you like a particular one, you may even be able to read the rest of the novel!

The ebook is available to buy here!
